Diamonds are graded by four criteria, which altogether determine its real price. They are referred to as the Four C’s.

Cut

The cut is not the same thing as cutting. The cutting method is often confused with the cut itself. Most diamonds are cut to 57 or 58 facets. If the cut has optimum qualities, the diamond will give the most beautiful sparkle and shine. The cutting technique is a matter of personal taste and has no effect on the stone’s value. Masters of this craft are able to cut the diamond to reflect the maximum of the absorbed light. The cut will allow the diamond to make the best use of light.

 [use of light]

  • When a diamond is cut to proper proportions, light is reflected from one facet to another and escapes directly or is refracted into the colors of the spectrum from the top of the stone back into our eyes
  • If the cut of a diamond is too deep, some light escapes through the bottom of the diamond.
  • If the cut is too shallow, light escapes through the bottom of the diamond before it can be reflected.

Clarity

Diamonds have much greater ability to achieve brilliance than other gemstones. A diamond without visible inclusions is of the utmost quality, as the originating light can move without limitations, with no obstacle in its way. A perfectly clear diamond does not reveal to an experienced eye any inclusions and/or blemishes even under 10x magnification. Minor inclusions have no impact on beauty and life of the stone. However, the clearer the diamond, the easier your choice.

Weight

Bigger is bigger, but not necessarily the best. We are talking here about the diamond’s size in carats. One carat is equal to 100 points. A diamond with 75 points weighs 0.75ct. The size of the diamond is the most visible factor determining its value. However, two diamonds of the same size may be of very different quality. Quality, high-value diamonds can be found in all sizes.

Color

The diamond is sometime referred to as a colorless jewel. However, pure white diamonds are very rare. These are ideal crystals which refract light as prisms into all sparkling colors of the rainbow. In nature, the diamond can be found in any color. Color shades vary from colorless to light color or tinted. The differences between color shades are very slight, as documented by grades within one category.
